Dinner, drinks and performances throughout the night to honor Jennifer’s legacy.
Join us for our upcoming season at BAM Fisher April 22nd-27th 2025!
The international dance community lost one of its great lights when Jennifer Muller passed on March 29, 2023. To acknowledge her creative force, her extraordinary contributions and her deeply felt absence, JMTW will present a celebration of Jennifer’s life and legacy at The Joyce Theater on November 6th, 2023. Friends, members of the dance community and generations of her company members will come together to honor Jennifer Muller with an evening of remembrances, historical footage and live performances.
In 1983, Jennifer told the New York Times “I’m not an abstractionist. A great deal of my work has a sense of celebration.”
We come together now to celebrate Jennifer, an artist who dedicated her life to her art, overcoming many obstacles along the way. She led with vision, perseverance and a steadfast belief in creativity as an essential aspect of human nature. Looking back on her countless contributions,
we celebrate her commitment to welcoming and connecting with a wide range of theatergoers, from newcomers to dance aficionados
we celebrate her immeasurable contributions to the lives of dancers – as performer, movement-maker, teacher, image-weaver and mentor to many
we celebrate her prolific outpouring of original, varied work, spanning more than five decades
we celebrate her extraordinary talents as performer, director, and choreographer
we celebrate her humor, her stubborn nature, her drama, her shared humanity
We celebrate her life and legacy.
This event is free to attend with RSVP. Join our family of dancers, alumni, collaborators, staff and friends as we remember and CELEBRATE our maverick of a leader, Jennifer Muller.
Address: The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue (at 19th Street) New York, New York.
Doors Open: 7:00pm
Event: 7:30pm
The Celebration of Jennifer's Life will be immediately followed by a reception, location TBA.
JMTW is self-producing this Celebration of Life, and we are turning to new friends and long-time supporters for help. We ask for assistance as we take on the theater crew expenses, dancer fees, costs to present archival footage of Jennifer, as well as expenses to broadcast a video of the evening worldwide.
Despite sizable production expenses, we aren't charging ticket fees to keep this event accessible for all of Jennifer's many friends and supporters. If you would like to help us, make a gift in honor of Jennifer.
All charitable contributions are fully tax-deductible. In this transitional period of our organization, fiscal sponsorship is provided by Unique Projects, Inc., a non-profit organization administered by Pentacle (DanceWorks Inc.). Pentacle is a non-profit management support organization for the performing arts. www.pentacle.org
JMTW will return to Alpha Omega's private outdoor gravel garden for a second program. Catch us live a second night as JMTW performs Attic!
Attic views a woman unearthing the detritus of a past love while sorting through boxes stored in an attic. Reminded of the harsh reality of her loneliness, she manages to reclaim her perspective by “letting go” of the relationship with compassion and renewed self-confidence. Attic represents a superior example of the personalized emotion-driven work unique to Jennifer Muller.
$20 TICKETS | space limited
*In case of rain, the performance will be held in the Alpha Omega studio theater.
Join us for an evening of live concert dance in Alpha Omega's private outdoor gravel garden. Come support the company as we perform excerpts of JMTW's piece Island in-person!
Island is a collaboration with photographer Roberto Dutesco. Mr. Dutesco created haunting images of the horses on Sable Island—horses, abandoned by shipwrecks, that have existed on the island without human intervention or interference. Taking its cue from the social interaction and imagery of these wild horses and what they represent as an increasingly rare natural phenomenon, the piece is a peon to the contrast between a confined existence and an unfettered, untamed state of being.
Focused on a parallel between the wild horses confined to Sable Island in Nova Scotia as photographed by Roberto Dutesco and the response to the emotional experience of living in a Covid era, the piece echoes the sentiment of our times.

TUB, choreographed in 1973, was a pacesetting piece in its use of unusual physical elements on stage. The piece employs a tub filled with water and is danced wet. To an original score by Burt Alcantara, Tub is both an evocative and playful piece about the symbolic and emotional significance of water and cleansing.
Music by Burt Alcantara
Original Lighting Design by Richard Nelson
Costume Design by Christina Ham, Stageworks
Tub and Cup Design by John Duff
GRASS (2020 Virtual Adaptation) is a piece loosely inspired by Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, from the depth of meaning and essential spirit of the writing. Whitman’s sensibility—his celebration of life and his awareness that the threads connect us all stem from the shared experience of longing, loneliness and the need for companionship— as well as from the contentment of being and the mystery of our connection to the earth and each other.
Live Music Performed by Julia Kent
Original Lighting Design by Jeff Croiter
INTERRUPTED RIVER: Propelled by Yoko Ono's hypnotic score and framed by Keith Haring's stunning decor, this broad canvas of a work witnesses the conflict and violence that arises when the natural progression — the stream of life — is disrupted and diverted from its course. Danced on a floor strewn with newspapers etched with red footprints, against a spectacularly vibrant backdrop, with costumes blaring Post headlines — all elements designed by Keith Haring— the piece becomes, in totality, a living work of art.
Music by Yoko Ono
Sets by Keith Haring
Costume Design by William Katz and Keith Haring
Lighting Design by Ken Tabachnick
INTERVIEW: THE WARHOL PROJECT: Based on the life of Andy Warhol, quotes capturing his point of view, and the photos taken of Warhol by Christopher Makos, the principle photographer of Andy Warhol’s life. The piece also employs images from Interview Magazine, the magazine that Warhol founded.
Commissioned and performed by Introdans, (the Netherlands).
Photos by Christopher Makos
Video Projection Design by Mark Bolotin

Dear friends and collectors,
It is our pleasure to invite you, a long-time friend and collector of Roberto's work, to the IAMWILD Foundation inaugural fundraising event. 25 years —a quarter century of exploration of the Wild Horses of Sable Island could fill the volumes of an encyclopedia. Roberto Dutesco’s voyages to Sable Island have produced the award-winning documentary Chasing Wild Horses (2009), seen by over 30 million people in 50 countries, two monumental sold-out books titled The Wild Horses of Sable Island and a dozen exhibitions around the world.
The IAMWILD Foundation was inspired by this journey. Please join us alongside Roberto for an intimate conversation about Sable Island, its band of wild horses and how his art and the IAMWILD Foundation platform of initiatives will care for their home, as well as our planet.
This event will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 6 pm. Join us for cocktails and a reception as well as enjoy JMTW’s pop-up performances of Mullers’ classic piece ‘Island.’
